Add the perfect amount of whimsy to reading time with a DIY pom pom bookmark. This tutorial walks you through how to make this fun and simple project!
It’s safe to say we’ve gone pom pom crazy in my house. We started by trying out a couple of different ways to make yarn pom poms and turned those into some fun pom pom pencils for a cute back to school craft. Although I totally love the pencil toppers, I wanted to make a pom pom craft more for myself.
Enter the pom pom bookmark.
I love to read, but the only bookmark I have is a cheap plastic one I picked up at the used bookstore (who can pass up a used bookstore?). Figuring out how to make a bookmark out of yarn seemed simple enough, so when I saw how fun our first few pom poms turned out, I knew I had to make them into DIY bookmarks.
They were cheap, easy, and add just the right amount of whimsy to my book collection. What more can you ask for from a bookmark?
How to make a pom pom bookmark
- Craft scissors
Start out by making your pom pom. Check out this post on how to make homemade pom poms for more info and pictures. I chose to do the larger pom pom using my hands, but you could also make the pom pom bookmark smaller using the fork method.
If you are using the hand method, wrap the yarn around your fingers 90 times.
Carefully remove the yarn from your fingers and tie a second piece of yarn around the center. Be sure to tie it as tight as possible.
Next, cut a third piece of yarn and tie it around the center of your pom pom to form a long tail. This is the piece that will go down the spine of your book. I made mine about 12-15 inches long, but this is all up to preference.
Start cutting through the loops of your pom pom, taking care not to cut off the tail.
The pom pom will look like the picture below at first. Shape it with the scissors until you get the look you want.
An optional step is to tie a knot at the end of the yarn tail to keep it from unraveling. Another option is to use 3 pieces of yarn for the tail and braid them together.
Pom pom bookmarks are such a quick project and everybody loves them. Everyone from my kids to my mother-in-law wants one for themselves. Sounds like I’ve got a great gift idea for the holidays—now the whole family can go pom pom crazy…even our cat, Ollie, has jumped on the bandwagon trying to turn my pom pom bookmark into a cat toy!
